Home - Harlan Coben

Image
The home usually makes us feel better. This word brings back all memories from our childhood when we were young and we didn't have to care about future. Well, Harlan Coben's vision of home is a little bit different. source Ten years ago two little boys have been kidnapped, firstly the kidnappers wanted a ransom money from their rich parents, then they dissapeared with boys. The families had to face up the tragedy but after few years they started to live relatively normal. But they have never lost hope. One day, Win Lockwood saw one of the boys in London. The boy is now teenager, but there is no doubt that this is him. With help from his friend Myron Bolitar, Win tries to find the second boy and brings them two back to home which is full of secrets. This book will keep you on your toes. It's interesting, lightweigh and full of plot twist. What happened that they when the boys had been kidnapped? And why one of the boys doesn't want to tell where is his friend? You...

Lilim 2.10.2003 - Martinez Sanchez Belen

Image
source Usually when main character dies, the story is coming to the end. But Lilim 2.10.2003 is one of exceptions. Here, the real story starts with dead of Diletta Mair. The main topic is old as world – war between angels and demons. If you think that Diletta is on the “good” side, you are wrong, because this story shows that not always everything is what it seems. Here, demons are better, we still can not call them good ones, but definitely they have better intention than their feathers enemies. The fans of romances will find something for them too. Alois and Diletta from hate slowly go to love, but they find a lot of trouble on their path, even lack of trust. I don’t think that this book is really about after-death life, it is totally a fiction but worth to read. It’s lightweight are easy-going. Perfect if you don’t want to read about serious things and just relax. What is important - Lilim 2.10.2003  was a debut of young Spanish writer and I think it was really good...

Wendy Holden - Haatchi & Little B: The Inspiring True Story of One Boy and His Dog

Image
Today I want to show you one of the most touching histories I have ever read. It's 1.      Wendy Holden's book - Haatchi & Little B: The Inspiring True Story of One Boy and His Dog. source Haatchi is an Anatolian Shepherd. As a little puppy, he suffered a lot. Someone abandonned him and fastened to railways. It was a miracle that he survived. Unfortunately he lost his tail and had a lot one problems with one leg. Owen is a boy who has a rare genetic disorder that leaves him largely confined to a wheelchair. He is very anxious and has a lot of problems with making friends. When Will and Colleen, the boy's father and his partner decided to adopt Haatchi, their life suddenly changed. Little B (Owen) attached to the dog. He loves him and sees the similarities between them - none of them can walk alone, they are both suffering etc. In the book, we can observe how their life is changing, how a little shy boy opens up to the world. It's really amazin...

Image
Everyone knows stories about bloody Mary. Yes, stories. There is a lot of different histories which are similar. And among them there is James Dawson’s Say her name . If you think that you know everything about bloody Mary, he’ll prove you you’re wrong. source Roberta “Bobbie” doesn’t believe in supernatural creatures. Halloween makes her laugh. Being in a boarding school she friends with Naya. They decided to summon the ghost of bloody Mary, just for fun. Caine, a local cute boy, joins them. And everything is normal until next morning when Bobbie finds on bathroom mirror a massage “Five days”. Five days to what? The race starts. They have five days to find out what happened to Mary and help her. The ghost gives them the clues but clock’s ticking. Will they find out what happened years ago and survive or they fail? You will find out if you read Say her name ! I highly recommend that!

The Selection - Kiera Cass

Image
Probably you have already noticed that I like trilogies. Well, The Selection by Kiera Cass was also a trilogy. After finishing 3 rd part, Kiera Cass decided to write 4 novels which are supplement stories and then she wrote also 2 books about next heir. If you like romances, you probably like this history. source The action takes place in future after World War III. There is no more USA but a huge kingdom still divided on states. But in this world the society is also divided – by casts. The hierarchy has 8 levels – first is reserved only for royal family, second for guardians in castle etc.   America Singer is “five” that means artists. After announcing the selection and after long conversations with her mother she decided to participate – not for being queen or finding love but for family, because she will get money for every week she will survive. And what is selection about? For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escap...

Pax - Sara Pennypacker

Image
source Just a glance on a book is enough to say that this is a story for kids. Indeed, this book was awarded in category – literature for children. But I think this kind of literature can teach adults as well. And “Pax” is definitely one of these books that can teach everyone. The story is about a boy – Peter and his best friend Pax that is a fox. We don’t know anything about a place where action takes place, just that there is a war. Peter’s father goes to the army and the boy has to live with his grandfather, who he hates, and also he has to leave Pax. According to Peter’s dad – the fox has to come back to the wood. This information is heartbreaking. That’s why during the night Peter goes away from grandfather’s house and tries to come back to his own house which is 500km away. He hopes to find Pax. In the meantime, Pax learns how to survive in the wood. He meets other animals and starts new friends, but he still misses Peter. source We read some chapters from Pax poin...

The Girl you left behind - JoJo Moyes

Image
source “The Girl you left behind” is actually one of my favourite books. The main story is about young widow – Liv, who lost everything. When the bailiff wants to take the painting of young red woman, which was a wedding gift from her husband, Liv starts to fight. Not only for a painting but also for her happiness. The second storyline is more complicated. The plot takes place in France during World War I. Sophie Lefèvre must keep her family safe while her adored husband, Édouard, fights at the front. When their town falls to the Germans, Sophie is forced to serve them every evening at her hotel. From the moment the new Kommandant sets eyes on Sophie’s portrait—painted by her artist husband—a dangerous obsession is born. This is definitely a woman fiction. “The Girl you left behind” shows us that the woman are strong and powerful. And they were like that ages ago, we just have to see this. When I was reading it, Liv’s storyline was sometimes boring to me, Sophie was more cour...

Le Getto intérieur - Santiago H. Amigorena

Image
"Le Getto  intérieur" written by Santiago H. Amigorena was one of the candidates for the Gouncourt Prize this year. Maybe the way of writing the book is not the best, but story is worth to read because of topic. "Le Getto intérieur" is a war and biographical novel. The author describes the story of his grandfather - Wincenty Rosenberg, who is the main hero of the novel. As we had the opportunity to read in many descriptions, this novel Amigoren breaks the silence regarding the traumatic events of World War II. source The main character is Wincenty Rosenberg, a young Pole, a Jew who emigrated to Argentina before the war, leaving his mother and siblings in Poland. In Buenos Aires, she met her future wife - Rosita, also a Jew and an immigrant. Regarding Vicente's pre-war life, we don't know much, although the narrator sometimes shows us events from the life of a man, such as the fight against the Bolsheviks led by Piłsudski or starting legal studies in...

The Three musketeers – Alexandre Dumas

Image
I strongly believe that everyone heard about “The three musketeers”. There is no possibility to not know the famous phrase ' All for one   and   one for all , united we stand divided we fall.' The story is about young man who really wanted to be one of the king’s Louis XIII musketeers source . At the beginning, he got into trouble, as a result he had to fight against three musketeers – Atos, Portos and Aramis; with Atos at midday, with Portos at 12:30 and with Aramis at 1 p.m. First duel was interrupted by guard of cardinal Richelieu. In this case D’Artagnan fought in one team with the three mousquetaires. That is how their friendship have started. Every chapter is more and more interesting. We read about their dangerous adventures which are very exciting. In this novel we can find out what friendship is, loyalty, love, but also competition or betrayal. From this story I have learnt a lot – we should follow our dreams and do everything we can to make them happen, w...

Divergent - Veronica Roth

Image
source Many people say that Veronica Roth copied an idea of The Hunger Games. In my opinion, that’s not true. The fact that everything take place in the future doesn’t mean that she wrote a story based on THG, we have a lot of books which plot happen in future. In “Divergent” future is not important, in fact, what happened in this book, could happen anytime and everywhere. There is a society divided for five fractions: the brave ones called Dauntless, the kind ones – Amity, the honest ones - Candor, the selfless ones – Abnegation and the intelligent ones – Erudite. People think that is safer when everyone has his role, part in society. Perfect civilization, isn’t it? Well, no. Teenagers have to decide if they want to stay in their fraction or switch to another – for the rest of their lives. There is no way to come back, because there is one the most important role – Fraction before blood. Beatrice Prior makes a choice that surprises everyone. Then Tris and her fellow fractio...

The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins

Image
I think a lot of people know The Hunger Games not because of the books but because of the films based on story of Suzanne Collins. I saw the 2 nd movie when I was in junior high school. My class wanted to see “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” in the cinema, so I went with them. When I saw “THE END” on the screen, I was very curious what happened next, so I reached for the books. It took source me about a week to read all three books. I was delighted by the story. In Panem, every year children between 12 and 18 years old from have to take part in game which is a punishment for the districts because they rebelled against Capitol and the President. In every district by drawing is decided who will take part in The Hunger Games, it has to be one girl and one boy. When 12 years old Prim is drawn, her sister Katniss reports that she wants to be the tribute and replace Prim. Katniss is almost sure that she will never come back home...

Welcome back and books of Paulina Świst

Image
source The holidays are over so it’s time to come back, start studying and (of course) write a blog. In this tern I want to focus on books. I really like to read, but unfortunately lately I don’t have much time for that. During the vacations, before I went to work, I had a lot of time to catch up and read some books of polish writer – Paulina Świst. She is a lawyer who write under the pseudonym because she doesn’t want to be recognized. Her books are about lawyers and criminal cases. First volume “Prosecutor” talks about advocate Kinga Błońska who has to defend her half-brother “Szary” in the court because he is suspected of killing three persons. Everyone knows that he actually did that, even Kinga, so her task is really hard. Things are going worst when she sees who the prosecutor is – the guy with whom she spent previous night. What’s more – “Szary” starts threatening her and put her life in danger. The story is full of pl...
